Care of Your Fur Coat or Jacket at Home
Your fur is designed for active lifestyles and to be
worn and enjoyed. These simple reminders will help you
prevent some common problems which can unnecessarily
weaken or damage your fur.
Loosen Up
Sitting down with your fur coat fully buttoned can exert
extreme pressure on seams, pull pelts out of shape and
break fur that is rubbed excessively (i.e. against car
seats). Always undo at least the lower buttons before
sitting down and unbutton your coat completely before
entering the car.
Accessories
Try to avoid carrying purses or parcels with shoulder
straps that can rub or break fur at the shoulder.
Dry Furs Carefully
Has your coat been wet by snow or sleet? This is not
a problem as long as you dry it carefully. Excessive
heat can dehydrate pelts, leaving the leather brittle
and cracked. The proper way to dry a damp fur is to
hang it in an open area with good ventilation. Never
leave a wet fur in a closed closet.
Use A Proper Fur Hanger
Never hang a fur on a wire hanger. Use a properly shaped
wood or plastic hanger.
Beware Of Excessive Heat
A hot radiator can singe your fur in seconds. Leaving
fur exposed to a heating vent for even a short time
can have the same effect. Singed fur curls and loses
its luster and little can be done to bring it back.
Cosmetics
Make-up and even your skin oils can dull or stain fur.
Avoid spraying perfumes or other cosmetics directly
onto fur. A scarf, worn inside the neckline, can protect
the collar of your coat from hair sprays, perspiration
or hair and skin oils.
Shake It Out
Dirt and salts can fade and break fur. Between professional
cleanings some dirt and sand can be shaken from your
coat when the fur is dry. Hold the coat from inside
the shoulders and shake it briskly. If your coat becomes
stained never try to clean it yourself. Bring it to
a fur cleaner.
